VOLVO XC90 MODEL OVERVIEW BY GENERATION

VOLVO XC90 MODEL OVERVIEW BY GENERATION

Volvo XC90 I (2003–2014)

When the XC90 hit the market, it made the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML-Class look downright strange: its solid appearance and seven-seat interior were far superior to what its main competitors had to offer.

The Volvo XC90 surprised with an attractive design - a combination of large and round shapes. Its front end resembled the old Volvo PV544 model, only the headlights were horizontal rather than round. Always known for its high safety standards, Volvo continued this practice in the XC90 model. Because of this characteristic, it became one of the most popular family cars in the US market. The high taillights at the rear were also part of the Volvo safety package - they were protected against small impacts and highly visible from a distance. The XC90's three-row seats provided room for up to seven passengers, where the last row was mostly intended for children. The middle seats could be folded down and moved separately from each other.

Under the hood, Volvo fitted various gasoline and turbo diesel engines with power ranging from 163 hp to 315 hp. In 2005, a Yamaha 4.4L V8 engine was added, which developed up to 288 hp (later improved to 311 hp).

In 2003, the XC90 won the North American Car of the Year award and the Motor Trend SUV of the Year award. Jeremy Clarkson, former host of Top Gear and owner of three XC90 cars, said that it was "the first car designed by a man with children, not by an engineer who had read about them in a book."

Volvo XC90 I facelift (2007–2014)
In 2007, the XC90 was updated with a new front and rear end and interior. Some of the engines were also changed for the US market. Later on, this model received a new logo with larger letters and spacing between them. In 2010, all XC90 models received painted wheel arches and later on, new LED headlights.

Volvo XC90 II (2015-present)

Volvo XC90 II (2015-present)

The second generation Volvo XC90 was another significant and expensive project for Volvo. Investing $11 billion into a new SPA platform, the new XC90 model introduced in 2014 surprised many. The design, engines, and luxurious interior were the standout features of the Volvo XC90.

The exterior boasts a simple yet attractive Scandinavian style, while the interior features a crystal gear shift and a 1400W "Bower&Wilkins" sound system with 19 speakers, all without luxurious leather and wood. The seven seats of the Volvo XC90 are also covered in natural leather, and the last row of foldable seats can accommodate passengers up to 1.70m in height. The overall exterior dimensions of this model are 4950 mm in length, 1923 mm in width, and 1776 feet in height, making it the largest Volvo car to date (excluding Volvo's long-wheelbase non-standard limousines). In addition, this model has good handling, feels solid, and is extremely quiet inside.

The first generation XC90 was a mixture of Ford, Volvo, and even Yamaha engines, technologies, and parts, but the new generation is quite different. It features 2-liter turbocharged diesel or petrol engines and a top-of-the-line T8 hybrid version that offers up to 400 horsepower, with fuel consumption of just 2.5 liters/100 km according to WLTP standards.
