The Volkswagen Tiguan is a mid-size, 4-door Volkswagen SUV, positioned in size between the T-Roc and Touareg Volkswagen SUVs. This model is the first Volkswagen car of its kind, aimed at competing with market veterans such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
The Tiguan is available in three trim levels: the base S, mid-range SE, and top-of-the-line SEL. From the outside, all three models look almost identical, except for the wheels, but the SE and SEL models have an additional roof luggage rack and optional panoramic sunroof.
The model name is also worth mentioning. Tiguan is a combination of two German words - tiger and iguana. This name likely brought success to the model and helped increase its popularity, as in a naming competition by the German car magazine "Auto Bild," Tiguan was chosen as the winner by 350,000 voters.
In the spring of 2020, six million Volkswagen Tiguan models were sold worldwide, making it the best-selling car in the entire Volkswagen Group. It is also the best-selling SUV in Europe.
Volkswagen has now released two generations of the Tiguan and two facelifts.
Volkswagen Tiguan technical data may vary depending on modifications. The table below provides general technical specifications for this model's generations.

Volkswagen Tiguan I (2008-2011)
The first generation Volkswagen Tiguan was introduced to the market due to increased demand for SUVs. The decision to release a Volkswagen SUV was a wise one - in 2007, the compact SUV Tiguan was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show and was a huge success.
Despite the economic crisis that hit the world shortly after the car's introduction, the Tiguan was well received in the market. The first VW Tiguan was built on the PQ46 platform. Although this platform was later replaced, the car still features a simple yet high-quality design. On the outside, the Tiguan resembles a tall hatchback, while on the inside, the VW Tiguan has many similarities to the Golf V but is more technologically advanced. The top-of-the-line dashboard unit (RNS510) comes standard with a 30 GB hard drive for maps, music, and photos.
When driving, the first generation Tiguan feels more like a car than an SUV due to the front MacPherson and rear multi-link suspension. The car can be selected with all-wheel drive (called "4Motion") or front-wheel drive. Under the hood of the Tiguan are turbocharged gasoline or diesel engines.

Volkswagen Tiguan I facelift (2012-2017)
The most noticeable change in the updated first generation VW Tiguan in 2012 is the design of the front grille, as well as improved front and rear lights: they are more angular, transparent, and brighter. The interior also received a new finish, a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel, and a gear lever. Additionally, new body colors are available.
The second generation of Volkswagen Tiguan was not just an improvement on the first one, but rather a complete transformation, starting from scratch. The new model is significantly larger, more powerful, and produced on a different platform.
The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is built on the MQB A2 platform, which was used for the first time on an SUV. Unlike the previous generation, it no longer looks like a modified hatchback, but instead has a solid SUV appearance. Interestingly, this generation of Tiguan offers a choice of two wheelbase options: a short wheelbase (SWB) that accommodates up to five passengers and a long wheelbase (LWB) with three rows of seats that can accommodate up to seven passengers. The interior is neat, practical, and of high quality, but nothing exceptional - clear instrument panel, an 8-inch screen for the infotainment system, the ability to connect to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
When it comes to engines, the Tiguan offers a wide range of options, including a 2.0-liter TDI engine with different power levels - from 150 to 250 horsepower (in the R version). The second-generation Tiguan is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen Tiguan II facelift (2021-present)
Although the Tiguan, introduced in 2017, has sold over four million units, even the best things need to improve to stay on top. Therefore, at the beginning of 2020, the second-generation VW Tiguan received a significant update. The update includes new design headlights, grille, and wider air intakes in the bumper. It also features a new engine cover, LED taillights, and a rear bumper diffuser. Inside, there is a new multifunction steering wheel, and the updated central instrument panel includes a new touch screen with the latest VW MIB3 software and "Volkswagen IQ Drive" function, which can take over control, braking, and acceleration of the vehicle.
