The Porsche Panamera is a medium or large luxury car produced since 2009. The model name Panamera, like its relative Carrera, is inspired by the "Carrera Panamericana" race name.

This model is unusual for the Porsche brand. Being a full-sized, four-seat, four-door luxury hatchback weighing almost 1800 kg, with front-mounted engines, the Panamera contradicts the company's characteristic lightweight, two-door sports cars with rear-mounted engines. Although the Panamera's shape and profile resemble the 911 to some extent, the 911 is a tight, performance-oriented car, while the Panamera is an exceptionally spacious, technologically advanced and luxury-oriented model.

So far, two Panamera generations have been released, each with one facelift. The third Panamera generation is expected to debut in 2024.

Overview of Porsche Panamera models by generation

Overview of Porsche Panamera models by generation

Porsche Panamera 970 (2009-2013)
The long-awaited new Porsche car range, named Panamera, was debuted at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. Although marketed as a sedan, it is technically a five-door hatchback with a wide-opening tailgate.

There are several modifications of Panamera, including the base models: Panamera and Panamera 4, as well as the Panamera S, 4S, and Turbo models with V8 engines. Externally, these models are almost identical. Their front and rear lights resemble those of the Cayenne, while the profile resembles an elongated 911 or the 989 concept car. The front wings feature two ventilation slots that allow air to be extracted from the wheel arches, reducing the effect of lift at the front. At the rear, an adjustable spoiler is mounted on the boot lid, which automatically deploys when travelling at speeds over 120 km/h.

Inside, there are four seats with a large central console that separates the driver from the other passengers. There is ample space in the back for adults, and as it is a hatchback, there is plenty of room for luggage. The instrument panel is typical of Porsche, with round dials and a central tachometer.

The V6 engine in the Panamera and Panamera 4 models is based on the V8 engine, retaining many of the V8 technologies, such as direct fuel injection, variable valve lift (VarioCam Plus), water cooling with thermal management, and more. The Panamera Turbo version features active aerodynamics with a multi-stage adjustable rear spoiler, and additional Sports Chrono packages include a Sport Plus mode with stiffer shock absorbers, air springs, and a 25 mm lower ride height.

In 2011, the Porsche Panamera lineup was expanded to include Panamera S Hybrid, Diesel, Turbo S, and GTS variants.

Porsche Panamera 970 facelift (2014–2017)
On April 3, 2013, Porsche announced the updated Panamera model, recognizable by its new front and rear bumpers. Technical changes include a new 3.0L Panamera S with twin-turbochargers and a new E-Hybrid model.

Porsche Panamera 971 (2017–2020)

Porsche Panamera 971 (2017–2020)

The second generation of Porsche Panamera has already established a solid reputation. This model has corrected the mistakes made in the previous version and now is more beautiful and modern.

The second generation Panamera is 35 mm longer, 5 mm wider, and 5 mm higher than the first generation, with a longer wheelbase of 30 mm. The designers tried to create a short engine cover and moved part of the engine under the front windshield area. This time, the rear part and the taillights resemble the 911 model.

Inside the new Panamera, the layout of the instrument panel has been redesigned, and touch-sensitive surfaces have replaced the buttons in the previous generation. Instead of analog gauges, there are two seven-inch screens and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with online navigation, Apple CarPlay integration, and an updated voice control system. An analog tachometer is still located in the center of the instrument panel as a tribute to the Porsche 356 model. As befits a luxury car, the interior quality is excellent - almost every surface is covered in leather or another high-quality material.

Under the hood, there is a new range of engines. 2.9L and 3.0L V6 gasoline engines, 4.0L V8 gasoline and diesel engines, and 2.9L or 4.0L hybrid options are available. All models, even the base version, have a four-wheel drive system.

Porsche Panamera 971 facelift (2021-present)

In 2020, as the world was dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, Porsche kept its promises and introduced an updated second-generation Panamera. The front of the 2020 model was redesigned with different bumpers. The previously optional "Sport Design" front is now standard on the updated version. The rear has an updated light strip that runs through the trunk lid, with new LED taillights. The new Panamera's interior features the Porsche Communication Management infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen familiar to Porsche enthusiasts. It has an improved "Voice Pilot" voice control system and wireless "Apple CarPlay."
