Ford Mondeo is a large family car that was first introduced in 1993. From the very beginning, it was called a global car and enjoyed great success throughout its production history.
This car marked a new era of refined design and driving quality for Ford. The first Mondeo introduced front-wheel drive - a revolutionary change for a car of this size from the blue oval brand.
The Mondeo was such an important car in its time that the former leader of the British Labour Party, Tony Blair, described the target voter as the "Mondeo Man" in 1996.
Overall, five generations of Ford Mondeo were released along with five updates. Unfortunately, due to declining sales and increasing demand for SUVs rather than sedans and wagons, Ford discontinued production of the Mondeo in Europe in March 2022.
The Ford Mondeo was produced in three body styles: 4-door sedan, 5-door liftback (a hatchback variant with a sloping roofline ranging from 45 to 5 degrees) and 5-door wagon.
Drivers could choose between front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive cars. The first two generations of Mondeo were produced using the CDW27 platform, while the third-generation model moved to the EUCD platform. The fourth-generation models use the CD4 platform, while the fifth-generation ones use the C2 platform.
The technical specifications of each Ford Mondeo car vary depending on the body type and modifications. The table below provides an overview of the technical specifications for the Ford Mondeo.

Ford Mondeo Generations Review
Ford Mondeo I (1992–2000)
The first generation Ford Mondeo was a global project that replaced the 11-year-old Ford Sierra in the market. It promised to be much better, safer, and more frequently sold.
The biggest change after the Ford Sierra was that the rear-wheel drive was replaced with front-wheel drive, and the automatic Ford Mondeo gearbox allowed the driver to choose between an economic or sporty mode, which was a novelty at that time.
According to unofficial data, Ford Mondeo was created for 6 years before being released on the market. It was one of the most expensive Ford projects, costing around £3 billion.
The first generation Mondeo car was available with CLX, GLX, Si, and Ghia trim levels.
Optional equipment was essentially what is considered a standard feature in modern cars – air conditioning, side airbags, traction control, and cruise control.
Ford Mondeo also had a heated front windscreen called "Quickclear", which first appeared in the Ford Granada model in 1985 and is still used today.
The automotive press criticized Ford for unreliable handling of models such as the Escort and Orion, but the Mondeo was an exception – its complex suspension design ensured the best driving dynamics in its class.

Review of Ford Mondeo Models by Generation
Ford Mondeo II (2000-2007)
The first generation facelift was discontinued in 2000 and was replaced by the significantly improved second generation Mondeo. This was a larger, safer, and more attractive car than its predecessor.
The changes made to the Mondeo helped solidify its position among the class leaders, and many publications quickly recognized it as one of the best cars in Great Britain.
Safety features included front seat belt pretensioners, load limiters, driver and passenger airbags, side and head airbags, and 3-point rear seat belts. The car received a 4-star rating in the Euro NCAP safety assessment.
In addressing the flaws of the previous generation, such as cramped rear seats and uncompetitive diesel engines, Ford extended the wheelbase in this model, creating more space, and installed new Duratorq diesel engines. Attention was also paid to the interior, which lost its rounded shapes and became more solid and higher quality.
The most popular Mondeo trim was the LX. These models were equipped with cruise control, air conditioning, radio and CD player, power steering, multifunctional on-board computer, and halogen headlights. Additionally, heated rear seats, automatic headlights, and rain-sensing wipers were available as optional extras.

Ford Mondeo Generations Review
Ford Mondeo III (2007-2014)
The premiere of the third generation Ford Mondeo was impressive, and even more impressive was the fact that this model appeared at the beginning of the movie "Casino Royale". The seven-year production of the third generation Ford Mondeo once again confirmed its position as the main British road transport vehicle.
The design and quality of the third generation Mondeo were significantly improved, making it a true competitor to models such as the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The exterior of this model was inspired by Ford's "Kinetic Design" principles, while the interior features a luxurious, high-end interior and a plethora of useful features.
This generation Mondeo was the first to receive a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. This was achieved by using additional airbags, standard traction control, and electronic stability control (ESP). Other safety technologies included blind spot warning systems, lane departure warnings, and automatic high-beam headlights.
The fourth generation Mondeo was offered with Edge, Zetec, Titanium, Titanium X, or Titanium X Sport packages, with the most popular being the Titanium package. Under the hood, the Mondeo offered a variety of engines, with the 2.0L TDCi Duratorq 140 HP diesel engine garnering the most interest.

Ford Mondeo IV (2014–2022)
The fourth and final generation of the Ford Mondeo was introduced at the North American International Auto Show. This model was characterized by greater refinement and luxury features.
Compared to previous models, the interior quality of the fourth generation noticeably improved, with a large information and entertainment technology screen playing a major role. Every surface of the cabin was made from high-quality materials, and the range of equipment, as always, was extensive. There were also numerous engine options available, but the introduction of the hybrid variant garnered the most attention.
As with previous generations, the Ford Mondeo was available as a hatchback, estate, or sedan. Unusually, the estate's boot was slightly smaller than the hatchback's (525 and 550 litres, respectively), although the estate was better suited to an active lifestyle.
