Overview of BMW X3 models by generation

BMW X3 E83 (2004-2006)

After the successful launch of the BMW X5, it didn't take long for the smaller version of this SUV - the X3, also known as the little brother of the X5 - to hit the market.

The new X3 model, like the first X5, was built on the 3 Series BMW platform. Although it is an SAV type of vehicle, it is not designed for off-roading and has been criticized for its poor off-road performance and stiff suspension. Its design has also received a fair amount of criticism, as it was said to look like a wagon on stilts. The BMW X3 excels on good quality roads, where one can feel its maneuverability and excellent engine performance.

This is a powerful car that boasts precise and sporty handling. Additionally, it is practical. Its spacious trunk and fairly roomy cabin make it suitable for a family car.

BMW X3 F25 (2011–2014)

BMW X3 F25 (2011–2014)

The second-generation BMW X3 debuted at the Paris Motor Show. Taking customer feedback into account, the manufacturer improved the car's appearance, comfort, and spaciousness.

With its dimensions, the BMW X3 F25 was almost as large as the first-generation BMW X5, only a few centimeters smaller. The manufacturer listened to criticism of the first-generation design and made the new model more attractive and less angular. Inside, the iDrive system was comfortable, there was more space for small items, the appearance became more sporty, and the details were of higher quality.

The X3 remains a solid SUV with a great driving experience. The handling of the BMW X3 F25 is responsive and even with a higher center of gravity, this model still handled like a 3 Series on the track.

BMW X3 G01 (2018–2021)

The third-generation BMW X3, codenamed G01, came to the market with a new platform, design, engines, interior, and a wealth of modern features.

While maintaining the strict yet solid appearance of the BMW X3, the manufacturers enlarged the already iconic front grilles and updated the bumper design, which now features vertical air intake slots visually divided into three parts. Inside, there is a smart control console with two touchscreens (for control and instrumentation) and a new semi-automated driving system that allows the car to stay in its lane, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and even brake or steer if necessary.

Under the hood is a basic 2.0-liter gasoline unit producing 181 hp. Also, two turbodiesel engines and a 293 hp hybrid version are offered.
