AUDI A6 MODEL OVERVIEW BY GENERATION

AUDI A6 MODEL OVERVIEW BY GENERATION

Audi A6 C4 (1994-1997)

The first-generation Audi A6 C4 was more of an Audi 100 facelift with minor improvements than a new Audi model.

The midsize, then-luxurious Audi A6 was designed for the premium class automobile market. The new model introduced minor exterior changes to the Audi 100, one of which was the front and rear lights, and a special buffer shape was adapted to reduce the coefficient of resistance. Depending on the engine and equipment version, new 16-inch lightweight alloy wheels were offered for purchase.

The A6 model had comfortable seating for five people. A new innovation on the market was the radio with a ten-CD changer. Drivers were also offered to purchase this model with integrated heated seats or automatic climate control. Some A6 versions also featured the "Quattro" all-wheel-drive system with a "Torsen" differential.

Audi A6 C5 (1997–2004)

The second-generation Audi A6 was more than just a facelift of its predecessor. It was the first true Audi A6 model.

The new model, named C5, differed significantly from the first-generation A6, at least in terms of design. The Italian-designed new look was very modern and distinctive at the time. The A6 C5 body was curved, with no flat surfaces. The sloping hood with integrated lights followed the bio-design trends of the time and served aerodynamic properties well - the A6 C5 aerodynamic coefficient was only 0.28. Also, this generation introduced the new Multitronic transmission, equipped with front-wheel drive.

For two consecutive years, the Audi A6 C5 was among the top ten best cars of the time in the "Car and Driver" magazine. This new and modern Audi model first stood up to serious competition from rivals such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Audi A6 C6 (2004–2008)

With the third generation of the Audi A6 C6, the manufacturers continued their search for unique design and added even more new appearance and equipment solutions to this model.

This generation model appeared on the market already with improvements from a new designer - Satoshi Wada. The car stood out with its single-frame, trapezoidal-shaped radiator grilles. While retaining the round shapes, the car's dimensions changed, it became 4.92 cm longer and looked much more solid. Inside, the instrument panel was complemented by a new information and entertainment system - Multi Media Interface - MMI. On the screen controlled by a rotating handle, navigation, climate control, and such car settings as suspension configuration and additional electronic accessories could be controlled.

Under the engine cover of the A6 C6, economical diesel engines and other powerful versions were installed. Apart from the monster V10 RS6, the highest version was offered with a 4.2 l V8 engine.

Audi A6 C7 (2011-2014)

Audi A6 C7 (2011-2014)

The fourth generation Audi A6 entered the market as an even stronger competitor to BMW and Mercedes cars. The new design, modern technologies, excellent quality, and pleasant driving experience lifted the C7 model to another level.

Although many of its details resemble those of the Audi A8 or A7, this is hardly a disadvantage. After the C6 model laid the foundation for the new look of Audi cars, the C7 did not deviate from the course and maintained a similar body silhouette, but new, distinctive LED headlights and dynamic lines certainly made the A6 model much more attractive. The new model shed kilograms and became more economical, and inside - increased space for comfortable travel.

The A6 C7 model also offered various new technologies, such as a night vision system, which not only allowed you to see 300 meters ahead but also to detect an animal or pedestrian that had run onto the road with infrared rays. Technologies also allowed for adjusting the sensitivity of the steering, suspension hardness, accelerator response to pedal pressure, and many other parameters as needed.

AUDI A6 C8 (2018–PRESENT)

AUDI A6 C8 (2018–PRESENT)

The fifth and currently the last generation of the Audi A6 was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The A6 C8 has evolved to include even more new technologies to ensure a comfortable driving experience.

The design of this model has undergone minimal changes, maintaining its sharp lines and becoming slightly more sporty. Inside the car, there are two LCD screens and a new MMI system that is easy to operate. The touchscreens create a sense of real buttons and allow each driver to save up to 400 individual settings. The instrument panel is also digitized and familiar to Audi drivers - the "Virtual Cockpit".

The well-designed autonomous driving allows for adaptive cruise control, the car to stay in its traffic lane, easy parking, and scanning for obstacles on the road. Although it is difficult to praise the new Audi steering mechanism, the steering wheel is too "light" and there is a noticeable gap from the road, the suspension and driving quality have significantly improved.
